What do you want to be when you grow up?

I’ve ventured through a few incarnations in this lifetime thus far, and 38 years in, I’ve come to accept that there will be a good few more. I’ve decided to become an adventurer for a while, and I think it will prove to be one of my favourites.

The most cherished part of who I am is music, and while I’m not pursuing music as a fulltime career these days, when I’m asked what I do, my instinctive answer is still (and probably always will be) “I’m a musician”. Regardless of where the rest of my life takes me, that is who I am at my core, even if it’s not what I’m doing right now. (You can find out more about my music here.)

Aside from music, I have an obsession with written word and a penchant for organising other people’s chaos, which in recent years has seen fruition in copywriting, UX testing, and project management in the digital realm. I’m a stubborn-as-hell, inquisitive perfectionist, and love the satisfaction of figuring new things out, which has lent itself to learning a myriad of unexpected skills along the way. As a result, I’ve dabbled in web design and development, scriptwriting, videography and shoot direction, accounting, retail point-of-sale systems, and online marketing… I’m also a gamer and LEGO nut, but this is not that blog.

I was recently retrenched from a job that I loved immensely, and have found myself in a life space that feels very much “in between” : in between what I’ve been and what I might want to be next… which at this point could be almost anything imaginable. I’ve been in worse spaces. Probably for the first time in my life, I don’t feel the least bit concerned about what on earth I want to be when I grow up (again), because I don’t need to be anything more than I am right now. What I do need is to see a whole lot more of this big, beautiful rock we’re living on, because I haven’t really done much of that yet and this seems like no better time.

So I’m going adventuring around Southeast Asia for a while; “a while” being an undefined length of time, dependent primarily on how long my budget lasts. It’s probably not a particularly responsible adulting thing to do, but I don’t much care for responsible adulting right now; I care more about living with my whole heart and doing everything I can to relish what little time we get to be human on this exceedingly beautiful planet.

I’m certain that this not-so-little adventure will add boundless volumes to my little story, and that’s all the reason I need to do it.

As a musician, I’ve obviously lived on the road before, driving countless miles around the beautiful part of the world that I call my home… but this little adventure will be unlike any rock ‘n roll road trip I’ve ever taken. I’m going to try my best not to plan too much and kinda just see where the sea breeze takes me – don’t get me wrong, I can be spontaneous, but it’s in my nature to plan things… especially grand, exciting things!

There will of course be mermaiding (which, for those who are new on the me scene, is a relatively new addition to my arsenal of personal obsessions), and hammock-ing, and a little trekking from here to there. Between all the sights and sounds of places that I’ve only ever dreamed of experiencing for myself, I’m hoping to get my pilates fix in a few studios along the way too. And then I’ll check in here to document said adventure with some visual proof, and pen some random ramblings along the route. You’ll also be able to see where I am at any point in time on the map. (That’s assuming I’m not stranded on a deserted island with no internet, which I will be from time to time…)

If you’ve been that side of the world and have any must-dos to add to my already-way-too-long list of awesome, feel free to jot them down below or drop me a message (here or on Instagram). I’d love to hear from you, and am beyond excited to share this little journey with you.
